Share

Authorities continued to search Sunday for a middle-aged man suspected of slaying an elderly woman in Carpinteria, stealing her motor home and shooting an older man in the parking lot of San Buenaventura State Beach.

The slain woman was identified as Evelyn Hendricks, 68, of Qualicum Beach, British Columbia, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Gracey said.

She had been traveling south toward Los Angeles in her motor home with her dog, Gracey said, when she was found beside Casitas Pass Road on Thursday, dead of a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators suspect that the killer took her motor home, which fits the description of a vehicle that a middle-aged attacker used when Harold Johnson, 62, was grazed with a bullet in Ventura. The vehicle is a cream-colored 1989 Ford Travelaire with brown stripes and British Columbia license plates.

Ventura police are asking anyone who has seen the vehicle to call detectives at 654-7700.
