A security guard at a Vista bar was shot and killed after he intervened in an argument between a customer and a bar employee.

Mario L. Doran, 30, was shot when he and another security guard at El Sombrero bar at 547 Santa Fe Ave. attempted to settle a dispute late Sunday afternoon, Sheriff’s Sgt. Manny Castillo said.

Joaquin Carrizoza, 35, of Vista, allegedly pulled an automatic pistol and fatally shot Doran in the head and chest, Castillo said. Doran, whose address is unknown, died at 10:15 p.m. at Palomar Medical Center.

Doran returned fire and hit Carrizoza in the leg, hip and chest. Carrizoza was in serious condition Monday afternoon at Palomar.

There were at least 20 people in the bar when the shooting occurred but there were no other injuries, Castillo said.

Carrizoza and Doran were standing no more than 8 feet apart during the exchange in which each man fired several shots, Castillo said. The floor and the walls of the building were pitted with bullets.

Castillo would not disclose the subject of the argument between Carrizoza and the employee.
