Dr. William H. Sherwood; Chiropractor

Dr. William H. Sherwood, who worked as a chiropractor in Reseda and Glendale for 51 years, has died at a Tarzana hospital. He was 84.

A longtime resident of Reseda, Sherwood died Monday of complications of a stroke, said his daughter, Nancy Emmaline Sherwood-Bosik of Orangevale, Calif.

Born in New York City, he graduated from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., before moving to California in 1936. He graduated in 1940 from Ratledge Chiropractic College in Los Angeles, where he taught during the 1940s and 1950s.

Sherwood practiced in Glendale before serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.

Sherwood returned to his practice in Glendale and in 1952 moved his office to Reseda. He continued to practice there until a few years ago when he started managing the office for his wife, who also is a chiropractor.

Sherwood was a member of the Kappa Sigma alumni, past president of the Hi-12 organization in Glendale, past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Glendale and Reseda and a member of the Jefferson Masonic Lodge in Jefferson City, Mo. He also had been an officer in various chiropractic organizations.

In addition to his daughter, Sherwood is survived by his wife of 32 years, Dr. Mary K. Sherwood; son William Henry Sherwood III of Manhattan Beach, and two grandchildren.

Visitation is planned from 5 to 8:30 p.m. today at Pierce Brothers-Praiswater Mortuary, 7245 Remmet Ave. in Canoga Park, which is handling the arrangements. A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at St. James Presbyterian Church, 19414 Ventura Blvd. in Tarzana, where he was a member and served on the board of Session.

Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth. Donations can be made in Sherwood’s name to St. James Living Memorial Fund at the church.
