Wimbledon champion Michael Stich of Germany overpowered Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands, 6-2, 6-3, Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of a $300,000 ATP men’s tennis tournament in Berlin.
Top-seeded Stich, 22, dominated with powerful serves and smartly placed volleys, taking the first set in 36 minutes and winning in 68.
Stich will face seventh-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden, who defeated Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Boris Becker had trouble with Shuzo Matsuoka before winning their Seiko Super match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, at Tokyo.
Matsuoka’s fans got so excited, their shouts and hand clapping interrupted Ivan Lendl’s match with Wally Masur for 50 minutes. Lendl eventually won, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2.
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg said he also found that noise distracting in his 6-2, 7-5 victory over 15th-seeded Frederic Fontang of France.
Marketa Kochta upset eighth-seeded Gigi Fernandez, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, in the second round of the European Indoors tournament at Zurich.
Kochta, a 16-year-old Czechoslovak native who plays out of Germany, will face top-seeded defending champion Steffi Graf in today’s quarterfinals.
