The man who died Monday after fighting with sheriff’s deputies in South El Monte has been identified by the coroner’s office as Joseph Ornelas, 25, of Pico Rivera.
Ornelas stopped breathing and died after a 2:30 a.m. fight with two deputies who stopped him from stealing a truck in a convenience store parking lot at 1533 Peck Road, authorities said. Before that, Ornelas reportedly ran across Peck Road to the convenience store, grabbed a dust mop from the store and brandished the mop and a knife at the two men in the truck.
An autopsy is scheduled today, with results from blood tests expected to take several days longer.
