The 71-year-old drunk driver who killed two people when his car crashed into another vehicle while going the wrong way on Interstate 15 was sentenced Wednesday to a year in jail.
Noboru Takashima of Chula Vista was also sentenced to give 100 lectures to groups on “the consequences of drinking and driving.”
San Diego Superior Court Judge Allan Preckel also ordered that Takashima be forbidden to drive for five years after he finishes his jail term.
Takashima pleaded guilty Aug. 6 to vehicular manslaughter in the May 20 deaths of Ben del Rosario, 60, and his wife, Noemi del Rosario, 56, of Seattle, who were visiting relatives at the time.
Takashima’s probation report states that he drove the wrong way on Interstate 15 at 70 m.p.h. at 1:15 a.m. when he crashed into the car driven by Florencia Cacho, 71, near the Felicita Road exit. The couple were riding in Cacho’s car. She was seriously injured.
Takashima’s blood-alcohol level was 0.16%, twice the legal level, according to a probation report.
Takashima was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, and an unspecified amount of restitution was ordered. The judge noted that civil suits will be pursued against Takashima.
