LOS ALAMITOS : Residents Receive New Trash Cans
New 100-gallon plastic trash cans are being delivered to residents this week as part of an automated garbage pickup system that will begin next week.
“There’s a lift on the truck that automatically lifts it and dumps it, then puts it back on the curb,” Assistant City Manager Gerard Goedhart said. “Los Alamitos is the fourth or fifth city in Orange County to go to the automated pickup. Most cities are going to go to it in the future as we have to provide a method to limit refuse going to the landfills.”
The containers--44 inches high, 32 inches wide and 37 inches deep--are on two wheels so they can be moved to the curb easily, Goedhart said. Accompanying brochures will explain the program.
Some people have expressed concern that they will generate more trash than can fit in the containers, Goedhart said. If that occurs, they can either recycle more materials in the existing recycling bins, pay $5 for an additional 100-gallon container or save the extra trash until they have room in the container.
Others have complained that the new containers are too large to fit through their gates, Goedhart said. In that case, they can call Briggeman Disposal at (213) 598-8729 to have a 64-gallon container delivered.
