TENNIS ROUNDUP : Curren Eliminates Rostagno in Tiebreaker Battle at Lyon

It took three tiebreakers, but Kevin Curren upset fifth-seeded Derrick Rostagno of Brentwood Wednesday in the first round of the Grand Prix tournament at Lyon, France.

Rostagno, who reached the final of the Seiko Super event in Tokyo last week, fell, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3).

In another first-round match, Pete Sampras had no trouble against Tom Nijssen of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-2.

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova defeated Elna Reinach of South Africa, 6-4, 7-5, in the second round of the WTA tournament at Filderstadt, Germany.

Navratilova, who turns 35 on Friday, advanced to the quarterfinals.

Eighth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat, who lost in the final to Steffi Graf Sunday in Zurich, Switzerland, defeated Pam Shriver, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, in a first-round match.

In other second-round action, seventh-seeded Helena Sukova defeated Amy Frazier, 6-7 (7-2), 7-5, 6-3, and fourth-seeded Jana Novotna defeated Natalia Medvedeva, 6-4, 6-4.

Defending champion Anders Jarryd of Sweden defeated Germany’s Eric Jelen, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CA Trophy tournament in Vienna.

Carl-Uwe Steeb of Germany defeated Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 6-7 (7-4), 6-3.

Horst Skoff, seeded seventh, was the only Austrian advancing to the second round. He defeated Roberto Azar of Argentina, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-3.
