The City Council voted unanimously this week to extend City Manager Ron L. Thompson’s contract through August, 1994.

While Thompson’s contract doesn’t expire for another six months, he requested that the council take an early vote on the matter.

“I asked them to extend it now because I intend to retire at the end of that term,” Thompson said. “And I don’t want it to become an election issue” in 1992.

Thompson, 59, became city manager in 1989 after serving as director of the Community Development and Economic Development departments.

Thompson’s contract, including a salary of $110,472, will be reviewed and possibly revised within the next 60 days.

The council met in closed session Tuesday and voted 5 to 0 to renew the contract. Mayor Gene Beyer called the vote a “well-deserved” show of confidence in the the city manager.
