PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : They Have the Corners Well Covered
Coach Art Shell said cornerbacks Lionel Washington and Terry McDaniel are having Pro Bowl seasons. Washington, a nine-year veteran from Tulane, leads the team with five interceptions.
“Washington is playing as good . . . as I’ve seen him play,” Shell said.
McDaniel does not have an interception, but Shell says opposing quarterbacks tend to throw away from him.
Former defensive end Mike Wise, who signed with the Cleveland Browns as a free agent, is expected to start this weekend against the San Diego Chargers.
The Raiders released Wise on Oct. 8 after a mysterious summer during which he left camp twice without permission for personal reasons.
Jeff Jaeger, with 60 points, continues to lead the AFC in scoring. He has made 17 of 19 field goal kicks and nine extra points. Punter Jeff Gossett leads the NFL with a net average of 38.4 yards. . . . Despite their recent strong performances, tailback Nick Bell and receiver Tim Brown will not make the starting lineup any time soon. Shell said there will be no personnel changes for Sunday’s game against the Rams.
