From Staff and Wire Reports
Showing their support for a race that was threatened for extinction, Alisa Hill of Upland and Mathew Yates of Britain raced to impressive victories in the Fifth Avenue Mile.
Hill, 26, the only American in a nine-women field, won in 4 minutes 31.57 seconds.
Yates, 22, took the lead with less than a quarter-mile remaining and held off late charges by Frank O’Mara of Ireland and Hans Kulker of the Netherlands in the 12-man field, winning in 3:56.75.
