A small plane operated by a student pilot landed safely at a defunct airport in Saugus on Sunday after running out of fuel as it headed back to Van Nuys, authorities said.
The Cessna 172 was on its way back to Van Nuys Airport from Fresno when it ran out of fuel shortly after 5:30 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Maria Bitman said.
Sharon Tew of Topanga, a student pilot trying to earn her license, made an emergency landing at the old Indian Dunes Airport.
Tew, 26, was uninjured, Bitman said. There were no passengers.
