Sheet Glass Slides Off Truck Onto Freeway

Nearly 40,000 pounds of sheet glass slid off a flatbed truck during the morning commute Tuesday, shattering on the westbound Pomona Freeway in the City of Industry and tied up traffic for at least eight miles, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Dave Boyland said the westbound freeway was closed after the 6:20 a.m. accident, just east of the San Gabriel River Freeway interchange. Traffic was tied up all the way to the Orange Freeway. By 9 a.m., the traffic was crawling through two makeshift lanes, along the center divider and freeway shoulder.
The driver of the truck, Jack Murray, 55, of Hesperia, was driving about 35 m.p.h. when traffic slowed and he slammed on his brakes, Boyland said.
