Children’s Soccer Clinic to Precede CLU Matches

A free soccer clinic open to boys and girls will be held at Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

AYSO, club and recreational soccer players under age 18 may attend the clinic, which will be held from 9 a.m to 10:30 a.m. on the CLU North Athletic Field. Players should bring soccer apparel (shirt, shorts, shoes, and shinguards), a soccer ball and water.

The first 50 participants will receive a free T-shirt.

After the clinic, the Cal Lutheran men’s and women’s soccer teams will meet teams from La Verne in a doubleheader. The women’s match will begin at noon, the men’s at 2 p.m.

Aaron Emmanuel, a former Quartz Hill High and USC running back, has been signed to the New Orleans Saints’ practice roster.

Emmanuel, who was dropped by the Rams in the final cut before start of the regular season, was selected by the New York Giants in the seventh round of the 1990 draft but was released during training camp.

Jayson Merrill, formerly of Newbury Park High and Moorpark College, threw three touchdown passes to help Western State (Colo.) beat Fort Hays State (Kan.), 42-21, Saturday and clinch a tie for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title.

It is the first championship for the Mountaineers (6-1, 5-0) in 12 years.

The Southern California Volleyball Club will be holding tryouts for girls aged 14 to 18.

Teams will be formed for players 14 and under, 16 and under, and 18 and under. Tryouts are scheduled for Nov. 10 at Pierce College.
