SPORTSCOPE : Pepperdine, UCLA Vie in Cal State Long Beach Water Polo Invitational

The Pepperdine and UCLA water polo teams will compete Saturday and Sunday in the Cal State Long Beach Invitational at the Belmont Plaza Pool.

The Bruins, ranked second nationally last week in the American Water Polo Coaches Assn. poll, will open against UC Riverside at 8 a.m. Saturday, and No. 5 Pepperdine will begin against Bucknell at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Other teams in the field include No. 3 UC Irvine, No. 4 Cal State Long Beach, No. 6 USC, No. 7 Stanford and No. 10 UC Santa Barbara. The championship match will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Pepperdine (13-4 overall, 4-1 in the Big West Conference) defeated UCLA, 7-4, and Irvine, 8-4, last week. Geoffrey Clark leads the Waves with 45 goals.

After its loss to Pepperdine, UCLA (11-4, 2-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference) edged Stanford, 8-7. Oliver Will leads the Bruins with 34 goals.

The No. 3 UCLA women’s volleyball team (15-3, 8-1) will play host for its own tournament on Friday and Saturday at Pauley Pavilion.

On Friday, No. 9 USC (14-2, 7-2) will play No. 11 Texas (12-4) at 5 p.m. and the Bruins will play Texas Arlington (7-11) at 7. On Saturday, the Trojans will meet Texas Arlington at 5 p.m., and UCLA will play the Longhorns at 7.

UCLA lost to No. 1 Stanford last week and beat California, each in four games. In the two matches, Bruin Natalie Williams had 46 kills and 25 digs.

The No. 17 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team (16-4 overall, 8-0 in the West Coast Conference) will play at Loyola Marymount (13-9, 5-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Last week the Waves, who have won 41 consecutive WCC matches dating to 1988, defeated Loyola in three games. Lesli Asplund led Pepperdine with 13 kills and four blocks.

The No. 16 UCLA men’s soccer team (11-3) will play host to Stanford (8-2-4) at 8 p.m. Friday at El Camino College and to Cal (4-6-2) at 2 p.m. Sunday at the North Soccer Field on campus.

Last week the Bruins won the UCLA/Met Life tournament and Cal State Fullerton was second. Other tournament teams were Army and Akron. UCLA’s Mike Lapper was named the defensive player of the tournament and teammate Cobi Jones was named the top offensive player. UCLA selections on the all-tournament team were goalkeeper Brad Friedel and Joe-Max Moore.

The UCLA men’s and women’s swim teams will open the season Friday in a double-dual meet at UC Santa Barbara. The Bruin women have 10 returning All-Americans and the UCLA men have six.

The Pepperdine men’s golf team finished second with 871, and Wave sophomore Lars Herne shot 210 for 54 holes to win the individual title at the Stanford Invitational. Colorado won the team championship with 863.

The UCLA men’s golf team tied for 10th place with 883 at the Red River Tournament at Dallas as Arkansas won with 856. UCLA’s Jorgen Aker and David Solomon tied for 21st place with 218.

The UCLA women’s golf team will compete Friday and Saturday at the Stanford Invitational. Freshman Jenny Park has averaged 74.8 strokes in two tournaments to lead the Bruins.

The Pepperdine women’s cross-country team was second and the Wave men third at the University of San Diego Invitational.

San Diego won the women’s meet and USC won the men’s competition. Wave Jen Fritz finished second in 20 minutes 31 seconds and Sheila Logan was third in 21:06 in the women’s 5-K race. Enich Harris placed 16th in 17:39 in the men’s 5-K.

The UCLA women’s and men’s cross-country B teams will compete Saturday in the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational.

In Monday’s pre-NCAA meet at Tucson, the UCLA varsity women were ninth and the Bruin men’s varsity placed 14th. The winning women’s team was Northern Arizona. Arizona won the men’s title.

The UCLA women’s and men’s basketball teams will hold their annual day for fans from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruin men will have a dunk competition and scrimmage for 20 minutes and both teams will take part in a shooting exhibition.
