PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Ana Builds Lead, Beats Huntington Beach

Share

Kevin Pola rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown Thursday night as visiting Santa Ana built an early lead and held on for a 21-19 victory over Huntington Beach.

Trailing, 21-12, at halftime, Huntington Beach blew several opportunities to get back into it. The Oilers drove inside the Saint five on their first two possessions of the second half, only to fumble the ball away.

The victory was the second in a row for the Saints (2-5, 2-1 in the Sunset League), who stopped a four-game winning streak by the Oilers (4-3, 3-1).

The Saints took the opening kickoff 60 yards on eight plays and scored on a one-yard Joey Martinez pass to Terry Anuu.

The Oilers scored on their next two possessions, first on a 56-yard Nola Sipan run, then on a 10-yard quarterback keeper by Jack Friend. Both conversion attempts--a kick, then a pass--failed.

Santa Ana took the lead for good on their next series when Martinez hit Adrian Rios for a 37-yard touchdown pass. On their next possession, Pola scored on a 21-yard run to make it 21-12.
