America’s Cup Skippers Set for Match Race Next Month

America’s Cup skippers Dennis Conner, Chris Dickson, Paul Cayard and Marc Pajot will race matched 52-foot Formula One Class yachts in the first of a series of races in San Diego Harbor next month, race promoters announced Tuesday.

In the sloops’ North American debut Nov. 23-24, the United States’ Conner, Japan’s Dickson, Italy’s Cayard and France’s Pajot will race in the Formula One America’s Cup Syndicate Championship. The same yachts will be sailed by their regular crews a week later in the U.S. World Yachting Grand Prix.

Grand Prix events had already been held in Scotland and Germany this year. The Formula Ones to be sailed are Conner’s Stars & Stripes, the Scots’ Scottish Enterprise and German entries Becks and Hawestu.

Point Loma Nazarene settled for a season-ending 1-1 overtime tie against Azusa Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Azusa Pacific.

The Crusaders outshot their opponent, 16-7, seven of those shots after regulation. On an assist from Denis Vargas, J. Doehring scored for PLNC at 57:00. Azusa Pacific tied it at 81:00.

PLNC ended the season with a 2-12-2 record, 0-4-2 in GSAC. Azusa Pacific was 9-9-2, 1-4-1.

Senior forward Paul Gelvezon scored at 6:18 in overtime to give the University of San Diego the winning goal in a 1-0 nonconference game against visiting UC Irvine.

Gelvezon scored on a pass from midfielder David Beall from six feet in front of the UCI goal. USD sophomore goalkeeper Scott Garlick made six saves in his third shutout.

The Toreros improved to 8-9-0. UCI fell to 8-9-0.
