PREP NOTES : Flanagan Catches Everyone’s Attention in First Start for Cypress

Share

Wide receiver Danny Flanagan made the most of his first start for Cypress High School last Friday, catching 20 passes for 207 yards in a 39-26 Empire League loss to Katella.

Flanagan’s total was the second-highest in Orange County history, surpassed only by Fullerton’s David Sepulveda (26 in 1984 against Buena Park).

“The only reason Danny was playing was because our starter (Johnny Teutimez) had a sore back and couldn’t play,” Cypress Coach John Selbe said. “I’m sure it was a game he’ll remember for the rest of his life.”

Flanagan utilized his quickness on short-to-intermediate routes in a no-huddle offense to pile up the catches. He ran primarily outs, quick slants and five-yard hooks.

“We got down by three touchdowns, and I told our quarterback (Gabe Garcia) to throw on every down,” Selbe said. “This is the first year Danny has played football since his Pop Warner days, and he surprised everyone. I think he has to start this week (against El Dorado).”

Garcia’s 31 completions was second-most in county history, tying him with Burt Call, who had 31 in a game in 1983. Todd French of Canyon holds the county record with 32 against El Modena in 1985.
