Man Charged in Drive-By Shooting at Dorsey High

A Los Angeles man was charged with attempted murder Thursday for a drive-by shooting at Dorsey High School last week that led to the controversial cancellation of a football game.

Davian Shaw Oates, 18, was scheduled for arraignment in Municipal Court on the felony charge stemming from the Oct. 28 shooting of a 16-year-old boy. The youth reportedly was trying to get out of a gang.

The shooting marked the second such incident last month and prompted officials from Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington to forfeit the school’s football game with Dorsey last Friday.

The attack occurred about 11 a.m as the teen-ager, who was not identified, stood outside a fence surrounding Dorsey High’s practice field on Rodeo Road, prosecutors said.

A gray car drove past and one of the occupants pointed a gun out the window and fired, striking the youth in the head, prosecutors said. The unnamed victim survived and is recuperating.
