Irvine’s Seal Makes Quick Work of San Clemente

Fullback Scott Seal packed a game’s worth of statistics into the first half and led Irvine to an easy 34-9 victory Friday night over host San Clemente.

At halftime, Seal had rushed for 151 yards in 19 carries, scored two touchdowns, put several tacklers on their tails and lifted his team to a 21-0 lead. Seal carried only four times in the second half. He finished with 153 yards and at least three knockdowns.

“Think so?” he said, when told he had done a good job of running over defenders. “I’ll have to look at the films.”

With the victory, Irvine improved to 7-2, 3-1 in the South Coast League. San Clemente dropped to 2-7, 0-4.

Defensive back Aaron Herr returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter to give Irvine a 28-3 lead and end San Clemente’s hopes.

A sloppy second half reached its sloppiest early in the fourth quarter when there were three interceptions in four plays.

San Clemente scored on the game’s final play when Morgan Bannister grabbed a deflected Brett Hall pass and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown.
