Disbelief Is Replaced by Love

Share

A hero is someone who gives his or her life to something bigger than oneself. Earvin (Magic) Johnson gives, and gives, and gives. His father taught him a way to play basketball. “Give up the ball,” he said. So Magic listened. He puts the needs of his teammates ahead of his own. He stresses that the game of basketball is not about “me,” it’s about “we.”

In spite of any moodiness, in spite of any hidden sorrow, he continually delivers with a smile. A smile that touches lives and temporarily makes the world a more caring, loving place. His reward is vitality and enthusiasm.

After learning he was infected with HIV, Magic Johnson performed his most heroic act. The grace that he displayed under the circumstances was almost as unbelievable as the news itself. But perhaps we should not be surprised by this man again. He follows his own simple formula. He gives himself to the world. He gives himself to life.
