Fullerton Takes Quick Lead; San Jose Takes Big Victory

San Jose State clinched at least a share of the Big West Conference championship with a 35-7 victory over Cal State Fullerton Saturday night before 10,112 in Spartan Stadium.

The defending conference-champion Spartans, 6-3 overall and 6-0 in the Big West, will play Fresno State for the title Nov. 23. They spotted the Titans (1-8, 0-5) an early 7-0 lead Saturday.

San Jose State quarterback Jeff Garcia, making his second consecutive start in place of injured regular Matt Veatch, completed 15 of 23 passes for 233 yards and rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

Shon Ellerbe, making his first major college start at tailback, added 89 yards rushing and a 58-yard touchdown run, and Maceo Barbosa had 78 yards rushing and touchdown runs of 20 and three yards. Garcia scored on runs of one and six yards.

The Spartans, who had seven sacks in last week’s victory over Nevada Las Vegas, got to Titan quarterback Chad May seven times for a loss of 64 yards. Linebacker Jeff Greeney had two sacks.

Fullerton had scored on May’s 10-yard pass to Robert Bedford.
