In a tuneup for next week’s game against Notre Dame, No. 9 Penn State defeated Maryland, 47-7, Saturday at Baltimore.

Representatives from seven bowls looked on as Tony Sacca passed for one touchdown and ran for another as Penn State built a 24-0 halftime lead. After that, the Nittany Lions (8-2) toyed with Maryland (2-7), which hasn’t beaten Penn State since 1961 and suffered its worst regular-season defeat since a 48-0 loss to the Nittany Lions in 1969.

“This is what we needed before Notre Dame,” Penn State wide receiver Terry Smith said. “We had to have a good showing. We had to come out and put everything together, then continue that next week.”
