A Guide to the Best of Southern California : DESIGN : Squiggly Lines

Share

Sculptors Pepe Ozan and Todd Wilson call their non-industrial, jagged-form tables and chairs the “alphabet of the future.”

“We’ve strayed from the standard, architecturally straight lines and adapted curved and sensual ones,” Wilson says. The San Francisco-based artists hooked up in 1988 during a display of their individual works at the city’s Arts Commission Gallery. Discovering that their designs encompassed the same “concept and character,” they decided to form a partnership--Enos Metalworks.

Besides furnishings, the pair produces stair railings and other custom architectural fixtures. Their creations, which are exhibited in galleries in Southern California, New York and Paris, are composed mostly of decrepit steel and wood and finished in patinas.

Yet somehow these hard surfaces seem soft. Says Wilson: “What we have tried to do is bring warmth and feeling to our designs.” Prices for Enos pieces start at about $200.

Enos Metalworks furniture is available at galleries in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. Information: (415) 822-1665.
