Jack Morris, the World Series’ most valuable player, and Otis Nixon, Atlanta’s suspended outfielder, were among seven who filed for free agency to increase the total to a record 99.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Pirates made a late $18.5-million, four-year offer to outfielder Bobby Bonilla, who filed for free agency on the first possible day. The offer was rejected by Bonilla’s Beverly Hills agent, Dennis Gilbert, and other teams can start making offers today.

Bonilla has said he was “99.9%” certain he would leave Pittsburgh.

The total of free agents broke the previous record of 96, set last year. Others filing Monday were three other members of the Twins--third baseman Mike Pagliarulo, second baseman Al Newman and catcher Junior Ortiz--plus Philadelphia pitcher Steve Ontiveros and Angel outfielder Max Venable.
