Ending five years of frustration, Banning High made two key defensive plays in the fourth quarter Friday night to hold off Carson, 21-20, in a Pacific League football game before 10,000 at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.
Banning’s victory ended a seven-game losing streak against Carson dating to 1986. It was the longest streak in the 39-game series that began in 1963.
Banning opened a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter on an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Andre Faavi-Tua’au to running back Larry Rayford, but Carson rallied for two touchdowns in the quarter on runs of five and 10 yards by running back Damin Hurst.
Carson pulled within 21-20 on Hurst’s third touchdown of the night, but failed to tie the score when Rodriguez’s extra-point attempt was wide to the left. The Colts were also hurt by three turnovers, one that led to a Banning touchdown.
Banning improved to 9-1 overall, 6-1 in league. Carson is 5-4-1 and 4-2-1.
