Stanford Coach Denny Green can start making travel plans for the Christmas holidays.

“We’re happy that we will probably get a bowl bid and that’s something that’s meant a lot to our football program,” Green said of an anticipated bid from Aloha Bowl officials after No. 22 Stanford beat Washington State, 49-14, Saturday.

“We’ve already played one defending national champion in Colorado and we look forward to playing another one,” Green said of the potential Christmas Day matchup against Georgia Tech in Honolulu.

Before the game, Green declined to speculate on a possible bowl bid but was more expansive after the victory. Stanford will play host to No. 6 California next Saturday to finish the regular season.

“Our big concern is Cal,” Green said. “That’s the most important game we play.”

Against Washington State, Stanford, 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Pacific 10, scored 35 points in the second quarter as the Cardinal defense forced two fumbles and scored on an interception of Drew Bledsoe.

Stanford running backs Tommy Vardell and Glyn Milburn combined for four touchdowns and 200 rushing yards in the Cardinal’s sixth consecutive victory. Vardell rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns in 22 carries, and Milburn finished with 60 yards and a touchdown in 13 carries. He also caught a touchdown pass.

Washington State (5-5, 3-4) was held to 43 net rushing yards.

Washington State Coach Mike Price said his team practiced a spread formation offense because of injuries to running backs. The scheme kept the Cardinal off balance for the first quarter.
