BOXING / WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS : Scoring Has U.S. Coaches Incensed
U.S. boxing Coach Pat Nappi has seen enough.
“I’m telling these people (the U.S. team) ‘let’s go home,’ ” said Nappi, angered to tears at scoring he believes cost Ivan Robinson a victory in the 125-pound class at the World Amateur Championships.
“We’re tired of being cheated,” said Billy Dove, president of USA Boxing. “With the referees and the (five) judges, we’ve got to beat seven people.”
Robinson a 49-47 decision to Park Duk-Kyu of South Korea in a bout the American dominated.
The difference was six points in two penalties assessed against Robinson by Yugoslav referee Jabucanin.
One penalty was for slapping, the other for approaching Park when the referee stopped a standing eight-count prematurely.
It was the fifth loss in the last seven bouts for American boxers.
