North Carolina’s Portnoy Wins Regional Tennis Title

Alisha Portnoy, a former Granada Hills High tennis standout, recently won the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. Southeastern regional doubles title with her University of North Carolina partner, Cindy Gurney, in Greensboro, N.C.

Portnoy, who graduated from Granada Hills in 1989 and was the team’s No. 1 singles player, was a finalist in the City Section 4-A Division playoffs her senior year.

Portnoy and Gurney, both juniors, are the Tar Heels’ No. 1 doubles team.

The duo entered the regional tournament seeded third and defeated Clemson’s Mimi Burgos and Mindy Weiner in the semifinals, 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.

Portnoy and Gurney faced Julie Exum and Tracy Hiete of Duke in the final, winning, 7-6 (10-8), 6-1, 6-2.

Portnoy and Gurney will represent the Southeast region in the ITCA finals in Minnesota in February.

The Cal State Northridge football awards dinner will be held Thursday at the Odyssey Restaurant, 15600 Odyssey Drive, Granada Hills.

The social hour begins at 6 p.m. Dinner starts at 7 and the awards presentation starts at 7:45. Reservations are required.

Mitch King, formerly of Camarillo High, signed a letter of intent Tuesday to play baseball at Texas Tech in the 1993 season. King, a unanimous All-Western State Conference selection as an outfielder last season, will play again this season at Ventura College.

The inaugural L.A. Chanukah Run will be held Sunday, Dec. 1, in Encino and will feature a 10K, 5K and 1K fun run/walk for adults and children.

Following will be a ceremony to mark the lighting of the first candle of Chanukah from the flame of a torch flown in from Israel for the occasion.

The run, sanctioned by the Southern California branch of The Athletics Congress, will take place at Woodley Park in the Sepulveda Dam Basin.

The 5K run starts at 2 p.m., the 10K run starts at 3 p.m., and the 1K event will take place after the last run. The public is invited, and race volunteers are needed.
