Vista 35, Sweetwater 15--Chato Jackson was held to 58 yards rushing, but No. 1 Vista (11-0) got a 22-yard touchdown run from Dante White, a 63-yard score from Jose Perez, and a 46-yard scoring pass to Perez from Eric Jencks to advance to the second round. Jackson, who carried 14 times, scored on runs of one and two yards. Jimmy Ramos blocked a punt to set up Jackson’s first score. Jencks passed for 136 yards as Vista outgained Sweetwater (4-7) in total offense, 334 to 161. Tai Lepule scored both of Sweetwater’s touchdowns, on a run of 11 yards to tie the game in the first quarter, and a 21-yarder to end the scoring in the fourth.

Chula Vista 49, Serra 0--LaMar Bailey rushed 17 times for 173 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 3 Chula Vista (9-2). Bailey scored on runs of nine, 41, 46 and one yards. Bubba Peterson carried 11 times for 60 yards as Chula Vista outgained Serra in total offense, 451 to 141. John Jeffries completed four of five passes for 107 yards and a 67-yard touchdown. Serra (5-6) got 85 yards rushing from Rodney Knight.

Orange Glen 19, Grossmont 18--Orange Glen (6-4-1) was an unseeded team when it reached the finals last year, and it opened this year’s playoffs with a similar theme: knocking off a seeded team. This year’s first-round victim was Grossmont 3-A champion Grossmont (9-1-1), the playoffs’ fourth-seeded team.

2-A First Round

El Camino 50, Crawford 0--No. 1 El Camino (10-1) scored all its points in the first half, 29 in the first quarter, 21 in the second. Elias Noa carried four times for 62 yards and scored three touchdowns. El Camino’s defense, led by Martin Arespe and Mike Flanagan, scored three touchdowns. Flanagan returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown and Arespe, who caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Noel Prefontaine, scored his second when he returned a fumble 15 yards to close out the scoring. El Camino also recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown. Crawford is 3-7-1.

La Jolla 33, Clairemont 0--E.J. Watson carried 18 times for 133 yards and the only touchdown No. 2 La Jolla (11-0) needed in its victory over Clairemont (4-7). In addition to Watson’s 13-yard score, Alex Brown carried eight times for 86 yards and touchdowns of 14 and 10 yards. Andy Anello completed a 34-yard scoring pass to John Zuanich, and rushed five yards for another score. The Viking defense limited Clairemont to 118 yards.

Oceanside 21, Kearny 14--The Komets (7-4), who reached the section final last year, relinquished leads of 7-0 and 14-7 before they lost their fourth consecutive game to end the season. Pirate quarterback John Portugal (17-26 for 175 yards and 2 TDs passing) outshined Kearny’s James Curtis, who rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Oceanside (7-4) scored twice in the fourth quarter. Marcus Andrews scored on a three-yard run to tie it, 14-14, and, after the Pirates recovered their own onside kick, Portugal hit Brian McGehee for a 27-yard touchdown on third and 20.

San Marcos 50, University City 21--The Knights (8-3) broke a 14-14 tie with three unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter. After Matt Lentz scored one of his three touchdowns on a seven-yard run, San Marcos successfully recovered an onside kick and capped an 11-play, 30-yard drive with a three-yard run by Mark Frazier (17 carries, 131 yards). University City (5-5) fumbled on the kickoff and the Knights (461 yards of total offense) promptly made it 35-14 when Denny McAdams threw a 48-yard scoring pass to Charles Stringfellow.

El Capitan 24, San Diego 6--Grossmont League champion El Capitan (8-2-1) rolled behind running back/kicker Eric Rockhold, who rushed for 115 yards on 17 carries, scored on an 11-yard run and kicked a 24-yard field goal. El Capitan’s defense limited the San Diego (6-4-1) to nine plays in the first half.

Escondido 30, Santana 7--Escondido (6-5) got 202 yards passing from one of the county’s top passers, Garland Copeland, in its victory over Santana (4-6-1). Escondido erased a 7-6 first quarter deficit by shutting out Santana the rest of the way. Escondido’s Brian Elliott ran for a touchdown in the first quarter. Teammate Mike Frank returned a fumble 72 yards in the second quarter. Elliot also caught a 47-yard pass from Copeland to give Escondido an 18-7 halftime lead.

Escondido kicker Lance Lawton booted a 42-yard field goal and Frank chipped in a 34-yarder in the second half. Lawton added a two-yard touchdown run between field goals for Escondido.
