Oregon State could think of no better way to end the longest losing streak in major-college football than by beating Oregon.

“It’s a great, great win,” Oregon State Coach Jerry Pettibone said after his Beavers upset Oregon, 14-3, Saturday. “I’ve got so many emotions running inside of me.

“All the hard work, what we have been through as a team, for the players to finish the season with a win in the ‘Civil War’ game is a tremendous thing for our program.”

Chad Paulson rushed for a career-high 149 yards and passed for a touchdown as the Beavers ended a 15-game losing streak.

Paulson became the first Oregon State running back in two years to gain more than 100 yards in a game, and the Beavers won at Autzen Stadium for the first time since 1973.

Oregon State, 1-10 overall and 1-7 in the Pacific 10, won in the longest football rivalry on the West Coast for only the second time since 1974.

Rich Brooks was on the losing side in the rivalry for only the second time in 24 years as a player and assistant coach at Oregon State and head coach at Oregon.

At Oregon, Brooks is 12-2-1 against the Beavers but has lost to them twice since 1988.

The Ducks (3-8) lost their final six games.

Oregon’s only score came on Gregg McCallum’s 37-yard field goal with 5:23 left in the first quarter.

Ian Shields capped a seven-play, 64-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run to make it 7-3 with 1:50 left in the half.

The Beavers padded the lead with 10:32 remaining in the game when Paulson took a pitch from Shields and hit Maurice Wilson with a 20-yard scoring pass.
