Larry Nelson scored his first victory in two years, winning the Dunlop Phoenix tournament with a par three on the fourth extra hole in a four-man, four-hole sudden death playoff at Miyazaki, Japan.
Nelson, who won $227,000, had finished in a tie at 12-under 276 with Jay Don Blake, Spain’s Seve Ballesteros and Japan’s Isao Aoki after 72 holes of regulation play. Nelson clinched his first victory since the 1989 Suntory Open in Japan with a par three on the fourth extra hole.
“The tournament was so exciting that I’m almost sorry I had to play and not watch it as a spectator,” Nelson said.
Nelson shot a final-round 68. Blake also had a 68, Ballesteros a 70 and Aoki a 66.
