OUTLOOK

This could be the Lancers’ year to break through to the top of the league standings after Mater Dei’s and St. Joseph’s domination over the past eight years. Bishop Amat was in every league game last season but faded in the stretch and finished fourth. Dimmitt, in his fourth year, hopes the return of seven lettermen, including three starters, will provide the experience and leadership needed to win the close ones this time. Among the returning starters is Perez (12 points, eight rebounds per game), a 5-9 inside player who was a first-team all-league forward. Drohan, a three-year starter, Martinez, Castenada and Chavez will also add valuable experience to the lineup. Dimmitt says team speed and defense will be Bishop Amat’s major strengths, but he is concerned that the team will suffer on the boards because of an overall lack of height. Griffin (6-2), a sophomore who averaged nine rebounds a game during summer league, might be the answer to Bishop Amat’s rebounding woes if she matures in time for league play. If she does, the Lancers figure to issue their strongest challenge to date against Mater Dei and St. Joseph for league dominance.
