The Master’s College basketball team rallied from a 20-point deficit Tuesday before falling, 96-92, to Cal State Los Angeles before a crowd of just 214 at Cal State Los Angeles.

David Humphreys, Tom Bruner and Bruce Watson hit three-point baskets with 35 seconds left to bring the Mustangs within four points at the buzzer.

Jason Webster led Master’s with 19 points before fouling out with 50 seconds remaining. Bruner had 14 points and led Master’s on the boards with 15 rebounds.

Damon Greer had 12 points, Humphreys finished with 12 and Watson had 11 as five players scored in double figures for the Mustangs.

Cal State L.A. (1-1) was led by guards Eddie Shannon and Etienne Graves, who scored 16 points each.

Master’s (2-1) trailed by 20 with 12 minutes 27 seconds to play in their first road game of the season. But at that point the Mustangs unveiled a zone defense that effectively shut down the Golden Eagles’ inside game.

“You could see the whole game turned in our favor,” Master’s Coach Mel Hankinson said. “Then, time ran out.”
