Southeast Area : Warren, El Rancho Score High in Testing

Several Southeast area schools and students were among the top scorers in this year’s Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon. Among the 69 participating high schools, Warren High in Downey finished sixth and El Rancho High in Pico Rivera was seventh. The other top 20 finishers were Whitney High (14th) and Cerritos High (18th) in Cerritos.

West High in Torrance won the competition with 44,911 points out of a possible 60,000. William S. Hart High of Newhall finished second. The winning team will move on to the state championship in March at Cal State San Bernardino. The national finals will take place in April in Boise, Idaho.

The top individual scorers in the Southeast area were: Peter T. Wang (7,385 points) from Whitney High; Kiet Truong (7,353 points) from Cerritos High; David Tien (7,263 points) and Jeff Chen (7,213 points) from Warren High, and Matt Walker (7,106 points) and Julia Koo (6,880 points) from El Rancho High.

The top individual scorer was Kevin Armstrong from William S. Hart High. He finished with 8,616 of a possible 10,000 points.
