OUTLOOK

Gunther returns to the helm of the girls’ basketball program after a four-year stint coaching only track and field at Orange. During Gunther’s first tenure in the mid-1980s, the Panthers won 66% of their games, and also finished second to Woodbridge in the Pacific Coast League once. But Gunther inherits a team that lost 18 of 21 games last season and also lost its leading scorer, Jinnie Hall, to graduation. “We’re not tall, we’re not a good shooting team, and we don’t have much experience,” Gunther said. But Gunther says he has some quality athletes, including Stroud, who is a standout pitcher for the softball team, and Wilson and Welty, who are both hurdlers he has coached on the track and field team. All three also played for the girls’ volleyball team. Moten averaged 11 points per game last season and is Orange’s leading returning scorer. Stroud averaged eight points a game last season. Chu, who played for the Orange junior varsity team that went 10-0 in league play last season, will try to fill the Panthers’ void at point guard. “I’m hoping we can break into the top three, but that’s being optimistic,” Gunther said. “After a haphazard year last season, the big thing I really want to stress this year is basic fundamentals.”
