Boise State, known for its defense but not for its offense, didn’t have much of either Saturday against Pepperdine.

Wave forward Dana Jones made all 14 of his shots from the field and scored a career-high 29 points as Pepperdine scored a 70-48 victory before 2,632 at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.

The Waves, who won their eighth consecutive home game dating to last season, improved to 3-0. The Broncos fell to 0-3.

Boise State went the first 8 1/2 minutes without scoring as Pepperdine took a 10-0 lead. During that stretch, the Broncos committed eight turnovers on 11 possessions and missed all five of their field-goal attempts.

Boise State trailed at halftime by only 32-25, but Pepperdine increased its lead to 48-33 in the first seven minutes of the second half, then pulled away as the Broncos went six minutes without scoring.

Jones, who did most of his scoring from the baseline, set a school record for most field-goal attempts in one game without a miss. Orlando Phillips had gone 11 for 11 against Texas Tech in 1982.

Doug Christie scored only four points but had a career-high 12 assists, many of them setting up shots by Jones.

Geoff Lear added 16 points for the Waves and Rich Welch was three for three from three-point range and finished with nine points. Tanoka Beard led Boise State with 21 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Wave Coach Tom Asbury praised his team’s defense. “With the exception of four or five times when we didn’t play post defense, we played well defensively,” he said.

Boise State Coach Bobby Dye, while praising the Waves, said he was “very disappointed in our team.

“We were in good shape late in the first half, but we decided not to function at all in the second half,” he said.
