PREP BASKETBALL ‘91-’92 PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE : Trabuco Hills

OUTLOOK

It’s a rebuilding year for Beidler and the Mustangs, who are young and younger. This year’s Trabuco Hills team is the second-youngest in school history, with only one returning starter and just three returning lettermen overall. “Our weakness is inexperience,” Beidler said. “Our goal will be maturing and learning during the nonleague season so we can be a strong entry in league.” Kargel is the top player back, coming off a sophomore season in which she averaged five points. Leckey saw some action at center as a sophomore and gives the Mustangs decent size in the middle. Beidler says both players have outstanding potential, and Trabuco Hills will rely on that duo while the younger players develop. Okano will help immediately in the backcourt, while Ross is up from the junior varsity. Beidler lists Costa Mesa as the league favorite but says the Mustangs could be competitive with the rest of the league in time. Estancia is expected to give Costa Mesa its toughest challenge, leaving Trabuco Hills, Century, Laguna Beach and Laguna Hills battling for third. The Mustangs finished third last year. Trabuco Hills might be the only team in the league without a senior starter. Last year, Trabuco Hills relied on all-league guard Shelley Calhoun from the perimeter, but the Mustangs will try to get the ball inside to their post players this season. Trabuco Hills has a number of underclassmen who have good size.
