OUTLOOK

Girls’ basketball has been the poor step-child to volleyball at Corona del Mar, but in his third season as coach, Flint sees reason for optimism. His assistant, Angie McCard, is also a lower level volleyball coach, and she has been encouraging volleyball players to cross over. Turnout for the three levels is at 45, more than double what it was last season. “We’ve got a good foundation there. I think that will help us in the future,” Flint said. But times might be tough this season for the varsity, especially in league play. The Sea Kings will miss Heather Flaherty, a second-team Southern Section All-Division III forward who averaged 17 points, and Tahlia Wagner. “Hopefully, it’s not as bad as the Rams or USC, but we are going to be rebuilding because of our youth,” Flint said. The Sea Kings have only one senior on the roster and five freshmen, three of whom will probably start. Mollie Flint, the coach’s daughter, was a second-team all-league selection as a sophomore, and Kane received honorable mention as a freshman. One of the team’s strengths should be the three-point shooting of Flint, Kane and Amoli, an addition from the junior varsity.
