OUTLOOK

The Griffins are the consensus pick to win the league championship and Cunningham is the league’s top player, no questions asked. Los Alamitos is seeking its third consecutive league title and fourth in the past five seasons. Cunningham is on Street & Smith’s honorable mention All-American list and was among the top players at the Superstar Camp at UC Santa Barbara this past summer. Last season, he averaged 17.1 points and was named to The Times All-County team. Carbone, an all-league selection as a sophomore, can drill it from three-point range and averaged 9.7 points as a part-time starter. Daugherty, who averaged five points last season, is the team’s best defender and held Loara’s high-scoring Tes Whitlock to a season-low 12 points last season. After Cunningham, Carbone and Daugherty comes a group of inexperienced players. The three veterans should give Los Alamitos enough to win the league title over Esperanza, however. As usual, Los Alamitos won’t duck anybody during their nonleague season. The Griffins play in the Trabuco Hills tournament, the Tournament of Champions and the Above the Rim tournament in San Diego before Jan. 1.
