A 20-year-old women’s basketball player was taken to Harbor/UCLA Medical Center Friday night after injuring her neck and back during a game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Gennifer Manzo, a member of the Cal State Hayward team, was hurt when she dove for a loose ball and another player stepped on her neck.

She was in intensive care Saturday night and listed in stable condition, according to nursing supervisor Linda Rodolso.

Coach Dennis Frese said Manzo suffered a spinal contusion.

“The swelling has gone down and she is getting a sense of feeling back,” Frese said. “She is able to move, but is tender and sore.”

Dominguez Hills was leading, 73-45, when the game was stopped with 57 seconds remaining.

Manzo, who was admitted to the hospital at 10:10 p.m., reportedly lost sensation in her neck and back.
