With Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras already out of the tournament, the withdrawal of Boris Becker from the Grand Slam Cup at Munich, Germany, because of a virus was another blow to the lucrative competition.

The tournament began as Ivan Lendl, Michael Chang and Patrick McEnroe won first-round matches. But Jimmy Connors was ousted after winning his first set without losing a game. Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland beat the 39-year-old Connors, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.
