OUTLOOK

How Valencia does this season depends on its transition game off the court as well as on. Three potential starters--O’Brien, Korey and Kevin Alexander--have been busy with football playoffs and will need time to make the switch to basketball. “We have too many guys still playing football,” Cyrus said. “We’ll show up and play hard, but we have to stay healthy. We have some guys who are starting right now, and the football players will have to come in and work their way back into the starting lineup.” In the meantime, most of the scoring responsibility will be on three-year starter Adolfo Gomez, an all-league player last season who averaged about 14 points. “He had some good games last year,” Cyrus said. “He’s a good rebounder, too.” Gomez has size, quickness and scoring ability, but his coach said the forward must be more consistent. “He’s hot and cold,” Cyrus said. “I think Adolfo could be all-county if he maintains some consistency every game, every practice. He’ll be a key for us all year.”
