The Second Harvest National Food Bank Network, of which Food Share in Oxnard is a member, was among 11 American institutions and citizens that received an award at the White House on Thursday.

The network, America’s largest non-governmental food bank program, was selected by President Bush and the U.S. Agency for International Development to be honored with the Presidential End Hunger Awards, said Food Share spokeswoman Susan Hixon.

As Ventura County’s food bank, Food Share is the link for 247 nonprofit food agencies, and serves more than 89,000 children, senior citizens and low-income families each month. This year, the group has distributed more than 8 million pounds of food with the help of some 500 volunteers.
