Walnut : Rabbits Permitted as Pets

Share

Rabbits joined dogs and cats as permissible household pets under a measure approved by the City Council last week.

The council voted unanimously to amend a zoning ordinance that prohibited pet rabbits in single-family residential areas. The amendment, which takes effect Jan. 11, limits the number of rabbits per household to three.

The change was prompted by Walnut resident Kay Ortiz, who protested to the council last July that her family’s pet rabbit, named Roger Rabbit after the popular animated film character, was forced into exile after a neighbor complained that the black-and-white bunny violated city zoning laws.

Ortiz said in August that she would board Roger Rabbit at a friend’s house in a nearby city until the council either granted her an exemption or revised the law.

“I’m relieved,” Ortiz said Friday. “Now Roger can finally come home.”
