Mario Lemieux, Jamie Leach and Bob Errey each scored twice as the Pittsburgh Penguins got a team-record eight goals in the second period and routed the San Jose Sharks, 10-2, Tuesday night at Pittsburgh.

Of the 18 skaters the Penguins dressed Tuesday night, all but defensemen Jim Paek and Peter Taglianetti had at least one point. In two games against the expansion Sharks this year, the Stanley Cup champion Penguins have outscored San Jose, 18-2.

The Penguins’ previous record for goals in a period was seven against the St. Louis Blues on Nov. 22, 1972.

Pittsburgh was already leading 2-0 when Joe Mullen scored 36 seconds into the second period just as a power play expired. Errey followed with a goal at 4:45, and the Sharks’ streak of killing 27 consecutive penalties ended with Lemieux’s power-play goal at 9:56.

Mark Recchi, Jiri Hrdina and Leach scored in a span of less than two minutes. Kevin Stevens got his 25th at 17:45 and goalie Jarmo Myllys fumbled Errey’s soft shot into the net at 18:30 for the eighth goal.

Pittsburgh had only a 17-16 advantage in shots in the second period. Myllys was in for the entire period. When the Penguins won, 8-0, in San Jose on Dec. 5, the Sharks used three goaltenders.

Brian Hayward replaced Myllys at the start of the third period.

The Penguins are 6-1-2 in their last nine home games. The Sharks are 1-16-1 on the road this season.

Pittsburgh’s Joe Mullen, whose brother, Brian, plays for San Jose, said: “I felt bad for my brother being over there. On the other hand, nobody’s going to let up, either.”

Hrdina was playing his first game since injuring his left knee on Nov. 13. Recchi has at least one goal in five of his last six games.

Vancouver 2, Detroit 1--The Red Wings lost for only the second time in 19 games as Garry Valk scored the winning goal for the Canucks in the second period at Vancouver.

The Red Wings had won four in a row and had run up a record of 14-1-3 in their previous 18 games.

The Canucks killed off three penalties in the third period, including a slashing major to Valk.

Cliff Ronning scored the other Vancouver goal as the Canucks increased their first-place lead in the Smythe Division to five points over the Winnipeg Jets.

New York Islanders 4, Hartford 2--Benoit Hogue scored two goals as the Islanders scored four straight times to continue their strong road play with a victory at Hartford, Conn.

Hogue scored a fluke goal 3:33 into the third period to give the Islanders their first lead. Jeff Finley’s slap shot from the left point missed the net, but the puck bounced to Hogue at the right of the net and he lifted a shot that banked in off goalie Peter Sidorkiewicz’s glove.

Steve Thomas added an insurance goal, and Adam Creighton scored the Islanders’ other goal.

Only 9,267 fans, the second smallest announced crowd this season, made the trip through a snowstorm for the game.

Washington 3, Quebec 1--Dino Ciccarelli scored two power-play goals at Landover, Md, as the Capitals kept the Nordiques winless on the road.

The Nordiques are 0-12-2 away from from Le Colisee. The Nordiques have not won in 16 consecutive road games dating to last season.

Quebec’s last road victory was March 10 over Hartford. The Nordiques’ last win in Landover was Nov. 6, 1987.

The victory improved Washington’s record to 23-10-0 for 46 points, tying the Capitals with Montreal for the best record in the NHL.
