Hansen-Dent Loses in Holiday Tennis Classic

Brett Hansen-Dent, the top-seeded men’s singles player in the tournament, was upset by Andy Stewart of Fresno State, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, in the first round of the 19th Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. Holiday Tennis Classic Saturday at Sunny Hills Racquet Club.

But two of his UC Irvine teammates advanced to today’s second round.

Tennis tournament--Due to inaccurate information supplied by tournament officials, Billy Wright of Stanford was reported to have lost to Jeff Belloli of San Diego State in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. Holiday Classic at Sunny Hills Racquet Club in Fullerton. Belloli defeated UC Irvine’s Jonathan Parker.

Neel Grover defeated Ilkyung Choi of UC Santa Barbara, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), and Marco Zuniga eliminated Mike Paradowksi of San Diego State, 6-3, 6-3.

Steve Saba of Saddleback College, the only community college player in the 32-player field, ousted Irvine freshman Chris Tontz, 6-2, 6-4. Saba will face second-seeded Gene Carswell of New Mexico, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Ken Pedroza of Stanford, at 9 a.m. today.

Jeff and Chris Belloli, fraternal twins and former Servite High standouts, were first-round winners. Jeff Belloli of San Diego State, seeded eighth, topped Billy Wright of Stanford, 6-1, 6-2. Chris Belloli of UC San Diego, who had to win three qualifying matches to advance to the main draw, defeated Mike Zuercher of Chapman, 6-2, 6-2.
