NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Longshot Wins Lassie Stakes at Bay Meadows

Luv Me Luv Me Not led from the start and held off a late challenge from Don B’s Princess to win the $100,000 Bay Meadows Lassie Stakes by a head.

Luv Me Luv Me Not, ridden by Fabio Arguello Jr. and carrying 118 pounds, finished the mile race for 3-year-old fillies in 1:40 1/5. She earned $55,000 and paid $52.40, $15.40 and $7.80.

Don B’s Princess, ridden by Ron Hansen, paid $3.40 and $2.80. Cotton Bloomers and Jack Kaenel finished 1 1/2 lengths farther back and paid $5.40 to show.

Thoroughbreds were off and running at Suffolk Downs in Boston after a two-year closure of the track.

With sunny skies, temperatures in the 40s and free admission to the grandstands, 15,212 wagered $1,231,680, said Tom Shanahan, a track spokesman. It was the largest crowd since Sept. 7, 1981.

Maryland-bred Wood So rallied to win the $107,800 Grade III Interborough Handicap for fillies and mares 3 years old and older at Aqueduct.

The victory was the eighth in 19 career starts for Wood So, who covered the six furlongs in 1:10 4/5 and paid $20.20. Favored Devilish Touch finished second and Do It With Style was third.

Joyce Azalene led all the way in the $43,390 Coral Gables Breeders’ Cup Handicap for fillies and mares on a rain-sodden track at Hialeah Park.

Ridden by Bobby Thibeau Jr., she won by a half-length over Sleek Feet, who was 1 1/2 lengths in front of Wortheroatsingold.

The 5-year-old ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:50 2/5, paying $20.60, $5.40 and $3.40. Sleek Feet paid $2.80 and $2.40. Wortheroatsingold paid $2.60 to show.
