Damon Stoudamire is one of the newer faces at McKale Center, but he helped extend Arizona’s home winning streak to 70 games Sunday at Tucson.

The sixth-ranked Wildcats (9-1) were holding a 51-48 lead with 12:24 to play when the 5-foot-10 freshman guard sparked a 10-0 run with two three-pointers and Arizona pulled away for a 79-60 victory over Santa Clara.

“My role is to come off the bench and try to give the team a lift, whether it’s by scoring, passing the ball or playing defense,” Stoudamire said.

Sean Rooks scored 21 points for Arizona, which actually won the game with its defense, holding Santa Clara (4-9) to 39.6% shooting (21 of 53). The Broncos went 5:48 without scoring during Arizona’s decisive burst.

“The key stat in any game, as far as I’m concerned, is what our defense allows,” said Coach Lute Olson, who got his 200th victory in nine seasons at Arizona. “We held them to 60 points and 40% shooting, and that’s important.”

Khalid Reeves added 14 points for Arizona and Chris Mills had 12. Pete Eisenrich and Rhea Taylor had 11 points each for the Broncos.

No. 15 Georgia Tech 92, Maryland 67--Matt Geiger had 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Yellow Jackets beat the Terrapins at Atlanta in an Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
