BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Gravley’s Shot Saves Laguna Beach

Darrin Gravley made a three-point shot at the buzzer to give Laguna Beach a 68-67 victory over Saddleback in a nonleague game Tuesday at Saddleback.

Gravley scored a game-high 31 points for the Artists (9-4).

Jason Register, who scored a team-high 22 points, made a basket and was fouled with four seconds remaining to give Saddleback a 67-65 lead. But Register missed the free throw, and Trigg Garner rebounded the missed shot and passed the ball upcourt to Gravley to set up the game-winning shot.

Gravley also had 11 rebounds and made six three-pointers. Chris Bradshaw had 21 points for Saddleback (8-6) and Luis Estrella added 14.

In other nonleague boys’ basketball:

Servite 64, Long Beach Millikan 38--Eddie Rubio scored 17 of his 23 points in the first half as Servite (7-7) took a 32-20 at the half. Adam Anderson scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds. The Friars outscored Millikan, 15-5, in the third quarter to take a 47-25 lead and allowed only three field goals in the second half.

Irvine 51, Corona del Mar 26--After playing to a 7-7 tie in the first quarter, No. 6 Irvine outscored the Sea Kings, 18-5, in the second. Brian Boothroyd made three consecutive shots in the quarter to boost the Vacqueros, who made 25 of 44 shots from the field. Boothroyd had nine points for Irvine (13-3), which opens South Coast League play on Friday against El Toro. Brian Linsenmayer and Jado Lee each added 10 points for the Vacqueros.

Doug Hesse, with 11 points, was the only player in double figures for the Sea Kings (7-7).

Orange Lutheran 82, Western Christian 68--Lenny Gavin scored 22 points for Orange Lutheran (4-6). In the first minute, Orange Lutheran scored four points and one three-pointer. The team also went on a 7-0 run in the second half. Josh Watson scored 19 points for Western Christian (4-8). Sixty fouls were called in the game.

Glenn 76, Anaheim 60--Oscar Gomez scored 21 points and Boun Malapha added 14 for visiting Anaheim (3-11). Anaheim led, 2-0, then Glenn raced to a 28-11 first-quarter lead and Anaheim never drew closer than nine points.

Esperanza 49, El Modena 46--Mike Thimgan hit two free throws in the last three seconds of the game for Esperanza (6-9). Teammate Matt Kordik scored 23 points, 16 in the first quarter. Mario Perez scored 20 points for El Modena (8-4).

Tustin 69, Brea-Olinda 53--Tustin outscored Brea-Olinda in the beginning of the third quarter 21-8. Jentry Moore scored 12 of his 17 points during the run. Derek Roach also scored 17 points for Tustin (10-6). Brea-Olinda (5-8) led, 30-26, at halftime.

South Torrance 75, Estancia 62--Matt Fuerbringer scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds for host Estancia (11-4), which led, 31-27, at halftime but was outscored, 30-13, in the third quarter.

South Bay Lutheran 64, Liberty Christian 57--Ronnie Joseph scored 17 points, 11 in the fourth quarter, for South Bay Lutheran. Mike Hoggatt scored 21 points for Liberty Christian (7-4).

In Olympic League boys’ basketball:

Cerritos Valley Christian 60, Whittier Christian 53--Marc Anureas scored nine of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter for Valley Christian (4-6, 1-0), which made 24 of 32 free throws. Jeff Rutter made five three-point shots and scored 17 points and Mark Berkoff had 17 points for Whittier Christian (6-6, 1-0).

The Heralds trailed, 25-17, at the half but rallied to tie the score, 37-37, after three quarters. Valley Christian pulled away in the fourth quarter as Whittier Christian failed to connect on numerous one-and-one situations.

Brethren Christian 62, Ontario Christian 36--Brethren Christian scored the first 10 points of the game and coasted to the victory. Seven-foot center Chris Fry had 24 points and Chiron Hart added 19 for Brethren Christian (9-2, 1-0). Point guard Carnel Hawkins, who is 5-10, had six assists and four blocked shots for Brethren Christian.

In Arrowhead League boys’ basketball:

Calvary Chapel 89, California School for the Deaf Riverside 61--John O’Brien scored 24 points for Calvary Chapel (8-4, 1-0). Teammates Ryan Elliott had six steals and Sabe Younger had five steals. Vincent Crump scored 23 points for CSDR (0-1).
